Cahill learned to play tennis in her native Ireland and came to the U. S. in her mid-twenties. A very hard hitter, she won the national singles championship in 1891 and 1892, when she beat Elisabeth Moore in the first five-set match ever played by women in the national finals.
She also teamed with Mrs. W. Fellowes Morgan to win the 1891 women's doubles and with A. M. McKinley to win the 1892 doubles championship. Cahill and Clarence Hobart won the first national mixed doubles title in 1892.
