Caponi joined the LPGA tour in 1965 and she won two consecutive U. S. Women's Open championships in 1969 and 1970. She also won the LPGA Championship in 1979 and 1981.
Her best year was 1980, when she won five tournaments and $220,619. The following year, she won $193,916 and became the third woman to surpass $1 million in career earnings.
The 5-foot-5 redhead loves dancing and has been nicknamed the "Watusi Kid" and "Boogie D." She cut back on tour events in 1988 to spend more time as a golf commentator at ESPN.
