Faggs, Mae (Heriwentha Mae)

Faggs discovered running as a member of the New York City Police Athletic League and later became one of Tennessee State's many track stars. Although she won twelve national sprint championships, most of her international success came on sprint relay teams.
She won an Olympic gold medal for the 4 by 100-meter relay in 1952 and was on the bronze medal relay team in 1956. Faggs was also a member of the sprint relay team that won a gold at the 1955 Pan-American Games, where she finished second in the 200-meter dash.
In AAU outdoor national championships, Faggs won the 100-yard dash in 1955 and 1956, the 200-meter in 1954 and 1956, and the 220-yard in 1955. She was the indoor 100-yard champion in 1952, the indoor 220-yard champion from 1949 through 1952, and in 1954 and 1956.
