In 1967, Ferrell twice tied the world record of 11.1 seconds for the 100-meter dash, the first time in winning the AAU national outdoor championship, the second time in winning the world title.

Running for Los Angeles State and the Los Angeles Mercurettes, Ferrell also won the national outdoor 100- and 220-yard championships in 1969, the indoor 60-yard dash in 1968 and 1969 and the rarely-run 240-yard dash in 1969.

She won both sprints at the 1968 Olympic trials. After finishing second in the Olympic 100-meter, she won a gold medal as a member of the 4 x 100-meter relay team. Ferrell was also the gold medalist in the 100 meters at the 1967 Pan-American Games.
