b. Feb. 22, 1890, Ottawa, Ontario
d. Aug. 7, 1937
Gerard spent five years with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Rugby Union before becoming a professional hockey player with the Ottawa Senators in 1913. The NHA became the National Hockey League four years later.
A rushing defenseman, he scored 50 goals and had 30 assists in 128 regular-season NHL games; he added 7 goals and 1 assist in five playoff series.
In six seasons, Gerard played on four Stanley Cup champion teams, three of them with Ottawa. In 1922, manager Lester Patrick of Vancouver allowed the Toronto St. Pats to borrow Gerard from Ottawa as an emergency replacement during the Stanley Cup final and he starred in two victories over Vancouver that won the cup for Toronto.
Gerard coached the Montreal Maroons to the Stanley Cup in 1926. He went to the New York Americans in 1930, returned to the Maroons in 1932, and took over the St. Louis Eagles in 1934, but quit halfway through the season.
