Hadl, John
Football
b. Feb. 15, 1940, Lawrence, KS
After playing halfback on both offense and defense at the University of Kansas as a sophomore in 1959, Hadl became the offensive quarterback for his last two years.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder joined the AFL's San Diego Chargers in 1962. He was a backup until 1966, when he became San Diego's starting quarterback. Although Hadl put up impressive numbers, San Diego had limited success while he was there, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams before the 1973 season.
Hadl completed 135 of 258 passes for 2,008 yards and 22 touchdowns and was named player of the year as he led the Rams to 12 victories in 14 games. However, they lost 27-16 to the Dallas Cowboys in the conference playoff game.
During the 1974 season, Hadl was traded to the Green Bay Packers for five draft choices. He spent two seasons in Green Bay and finished his playing career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1976 and 1977.
During his 16 professional seasons, Hadl completed 2,363 of 4,687 attempts for 33,573 yards and 244 touchdowns. He coached the Los Angeles Wranglers of the U. S. Football League to a 3-15-0 record in 1985.
